Boston States Fiddle Camp

About Boston States

The Boston States Fiddle Camp is a week-long program founded in 2020 by Katie McNally, Dorene Higgons, and Katharine MacPhail, with help from Rachel Reeds. At Boston States, we offer a unique musical immersion by taking a week-long deep dive into Scottish and Cape Breton traditional music and dance. Our priority is to provide the world’s best instruction in Scottish music all while building our local community and fostering creativity and FUN across ability levels, age, and backgrounds. We offer classes in fiddle, piano, guitar, step dancing, and more.

The Virtual Set-Up

Because of ongoing concerns with COVID-19, Boston States Fiddle Camp will not be launching in person this year. Instead, they will be hosting a week of online workshops, jams, and parties on Zoom. To help keep up all of our spirits, maintain a sense of community, and keep their faculty employed, they are rolling out an online camp with classes August 17-21, 2020. What will be provided:

  • 1 fiddle class each day from a rotating featured instructor

  • 1 rotating non-fiddle class each day: step-dance, guitar, piano, singing, cello

  • 1 elective each day: cooking class with Nancy Bell! Interpretive dance with Elias Alexander!

  • 45-minute session every evening led by our auxiliary fiddle staff

  • GALA CONCERT on Friday night featuring all of the faculty

  • Dropbox with recordings and sheet music for the week

  • Check-in email each morning of camp

All classes will be recorded and available to watch later if you are working/unavailable during the hours that classes are taking place. Because of these extenuating circumstances, all classes will be conducted at an intermediate level.
